My Favourite Indoor Plant (Discussion)

anteaya saidWed, 16 Apr 2008 23:04:27 -0000 ( Link )

I really liked the Title of Adam’s Lesson, How to Choose a Good Office Plant. I thought it would be fun to create a discussion about what plants people have found that work well indoors.

It took me a long time but I found a plant called Pathos. It wilts when it needs water, so I know when to water it. It turns yellow when it has too much sun, so I move it into shade if it is yellow. It can tolerate temperature fluctuations that happen when I am away for a week in the winter. It grows even when it is pot bound. This is my kind of plant!

I will be interested to hear what plants others have found.

I’ve had great luck with my Jade plant. It’s survived 1 office, 3 moves, and has been living for 3 years now. I had been worried it was get too big for me, but they grow really slowly, so it’s great!

I also have a mystery plant that’s been thriving since the sun came back out. I was told it was a cutting of a Camelia – but the stem doesn’t look right for that. Maybe I’ll take a picture and you guys can help me identify it.

My kitchen has 3 skylights in it though – so I get a huge advantage when it comes to indoor gardening.

A great plant to always have in either the work or at home is the Aloe plant. It grows very easily without too much potting soil. It is a low maintenance plant and serves a real use aside from being imposing with its self made defenses. At home, having an aloe plant can serve as a quick first aid kit. Aloe is used in most after-burn products and now-a-days is even featured in bottled drinks! Just snap off a small stock from your plant and squeeze the gel out of the plant onto the afflicted area. At work, the Aloe plant also serves as a first aid kit. Get a nasty papercut or worse (at my workplace)? Well, dab some Aloe onto your wound and it will quickly calm the cut and help it heal much faster so you don’t have to fill out any WSIB forms.

My favourite plant is called a ZZ Plant. It can handle low light, is slow growing, and isn’t messy and doesn’t need trimming. It only needs to be watered every few weeks. It forms clumps so after a while you can divide it into more plants and give as gifts!

@ tangledgarden. That is a very interesting plant indeed. You’d think it wouldn’t need too much water as it looks like it retains a lot within it’s stems and succulent leaves. Thanks for sharing!

My favourite indoor house plant is my pet Johnny. He’s a plastic tree that stands in my basement. Johnny converts the atmosphere of a cold, dark basement into a much livelier place (ironically), and he’s a very clean pet you don’t have to clean after or even water.

I’m a big fan of plastic plants. I know a lot of people hate them, but I think they can look really nice, last longer than anything I could ever grow with my death-touch hands, and don’t require anything.
