I have a plant.... (Discussion)

Good news everyone! I got a plant. A real one this time…

I’m afraid I might kill it, because I have no idea of what to do with it. Don’t even ask me what kind of a plant it is… it’s pretty tiny, sits in a cup, with longish leaves that come out of the ground, and the leaves have a yellowish-light green stripe in the middle and then green stripes on the outside. The tips of the leaves are already brown and dead-looking…

Any tips on what do I do with it? What do plants like? I don’t know what I’m doing here to be honest…

Can you take a picture so we can try and figure out what it is?>

Generally speaking plants like light and water. If the tips of the leaves are brown, check the soil for moisture. A good way to tell if water is needed is to stick your finger in the plant up to the knuckle. If it’s dry, it needs water.

How did you wind up with this plant?

I got it as a birthday present actually… the soil feels ok, but I don’t really know… I’ll take a picture if I can get hold of a camera at some point. It’s not a practicularly good looking plant though.

    Few more tips then:

Make sure it gets lots of light (even artificial light is okay), and if you’re keeping it close to the window make sure it’s not too cold for the plant.

As Heather said, a picture would definitely help us identify your prized plant! I have a feeling it may be a spider plant just from the description. Are the leaves waxy? As for the brown edges, this may be from overwatering or lack of sunlight. I sometimes take off these bits, but it doesn’t matter a whole lot whether you do or not.

The good thing is that your little plant will help to cleanse the air around you. Plants are like little green powerhouses that help purify indoor air.

Looking forward to seeing your new eco-addition!

    Oh no!

I’ve watered my plant some days ago (I hope not too much), and it looks bad now. The leave edges are still brown, and now the leaves can baerly stand up, they sort of fold in the middle because they’re too weak to keep straight. What do I do? More water, more sunlight?

I think it is a spider plant, it sort of looks like this one:

The leaves are longer and thinner though, but it’s the same idea.

James is getting all brown. I decided it was sick before I got it, and so there wasn’t anything I could do about it to begin with. It makes me feel slightly less bad about killing it. I have the touch of death, stay away!

So what do I do with a dead plant? Giving it a proper burial seems a bit odd… do I just throw it in the garbage or is there a special way to get rid of plants?

You should change the pot with large amount of new soil with earth ball of its roots, and for browning of leaves u should add some urea and boron in the soil to provide the nitrogen for green colour to leaves, and boron to avoid browning bcoz nitrogen deficiency leads to yellowing of leaves

Basically it is spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) one of the most common of houseplants. you should the direct sunlight on it bcoz it requires very less intensity of light, direct sunlight may also the cause of browning.

Thanks a lot for the tips! But they’re a bit late now, James died. It had some weird white cobweb-like stuff all over it, so I figure it was sick somehow. I may have given it too much sunlight.

I’m sticking with fake plastic plants for now.
